Question:
Assalamu alaikum
What should be done if a person missed the Arabic khutbah as a result of coming late for jummah and only prayed two rakaats?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-Salāmu ‘Alaykum Wa-Rahmatullāhi Wa-Barakātuh.
The day of Friday is blessed and virtuous and is also the greatest day of the week. Refer to the following Hadith:
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «خَيْرُ يَوْمٍ طَلَعَتْ عَلَيْهِ الشَّمْسُ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ، فِيهِ خُلِقَ آدَمُ، وَفِيهِ أُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ، وَفِيهِ أُخْرِجَ مِنْهَا»
Translation: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam [Alaihis Salaam] was created, on it he was made to enter Paradise, on it he was expelled from it.[1]
It is also extremely virtuous to attend the Jumu’ah prayer early. Refer to the following Hadith:
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ، كَانَ عَلَى كُلِّ بَابٍ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْمَسْجِدِ مَلَائِكَةٌ يَكْتُبُونَ الْأَوَّلَ فَالْأَوَّلَ، فَإِذَا جَلَسَ الْإِمَامُ طَوَوُا الصُّحُفَ، وَجَاءُوا يَسْتَمِعُونَ الذِّكْرَ، وَمَثَلُ الْمُهَجِّرِ كَمَثَلِ الَّذِي يُهْدِي الْبَدَنَةَ، ثُمَّ كَالَّذِي يُهْدِي بَقَرَةً، ثُمَّ كَالَّذِي يُهْدِي الْكَبْشَ، ثُمَّ كَالَّذِي يُهْدِي الدَّجَاجَةَ، ثُمَّ كَالَّذِي يُهْدِي الْبَيْضَةَ.
Translation: The Prophet ﷺ said: When Friday comes, at every gate of the masjid there are angels who write down the people’s names in the order in which they come, then when the imam comes out, they roll up the scrolls and listen to the khutbah. The one who comes early to the prayer is like the one who sacrifices a camel, then the one who comes after him is like the one who sacrifices a cow, then the one who comes after him is like the one who sacrifices a ram until he ﷺ mentioned a chicken and an egg.[2]
It is evident from the above Hadith that a person should exert in going early for the Jumu’ah prayer.
If a person comes late to the Jumu’ah prayer and misses the Khutbah but attains the Salaah, his Salaah will be valid. However he will not attain the benefits of the virtues of Friday.[3]

قلت أَرَأَيْت رجلا أدْرك مَعَ الإِمَام يَوْم الْجُمُعَة رَكْعَة أَو أدْرك الإِمَام فِي التَّشَهُّد قبل أَن يسلم أَو بعد مَا تشهد قبل أَن يسلم أَو أدْركهُ بعد مَا سلم وَهُوَ فِي سَجْدَتي السَّهْو قَالَ أدْرك هَذَا مَعَه الصَّلَاة وَعَلِيهِ أَن يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ……. قلت أَرَأَيْت رجلا أدْرك الإِمَام يَوْم الْجُمُعَة وَهُوَ يتَشَهَّد أيصلي الْجُمُعَة قَالَ نعم قلت لم قَالَ أَرَأَيْت مُسَافِرًا دخل فِي صَلَاة مُقيم كم يُصَلِّي قلت يُصَلِّي صَلَاة مُقيم أَربع رَكْعَات قَالَ فَهَذَا وَذَاكَ سَوَاء أَلا ترى لَو أَنه أدْرك مَعَ الإِمَام الصَّلَاة وَجَبت عَلَيْهِ صلَاته فَكيف يُصَلِّي غير صلَاته وَقد دخل فِي صلَاته ونواها.

ومن أدركها في التشهد أو سجود السهو أتم جمعته والله أعلم….. “ومن أدركها” أي الجمعة “في التشهد أو” في “سجود السهو” وتشهده “أتم جمعة”
